Suchań 2013 – end of the excavation season

2013.08.05 -

On 28 July – end of the archaeological fieldwork season 2013 at Suchań.

The investigation helped identify the western margin of the Migration Period settlement associated presumably with a short-lived presence of arrivals from Scandinavia, most likely form Bornholm; this is indicated by pottery finds and the earlier recovered metal finds. Samples were taken to verify the chronology of the excavated features by C14 analysis. If our deductions are confirmed by this input we may need to revise our current interpretation of the circumstances of influx of Roman solidi and Scandinavian imports (gold bracteats and neckrings) to the region. In fact, they may be associated with a physical presence of settlers from the North.

The archaeological record from Suchań and its vicinity is to be presented in 2014 at an exhibition held by the National Museum in Szczecin, with honorary sponsorship of the Mayor of Suchań, mgr inż. Stanisława Bodnar. An introductory analysis of the prehistory of Suchań and its area will also be published on this occasion.

The archaeologists were offered lodgings in the Primary and Middle School Complex in Suchań. All team members are very grateful for the hospitality, friendliness and welcoming atmosphere offered them at Suchań.

The fieldwork is to continue for at least two more seasons. Applications from volunteers are highly appreciated.
