Suchań, Pomerania, 2013

2013.07.10 -

On 1 July, with the permit from the regional branch of the Monuments Protection Office in Szczecin in hand, we started a regular archaeological excavation at Suchań, distr. Stargard Szczeciński, on the site of discovery of archaeological objects from 6th-century AD provenanced to Bornholm (Scandinavian bracteats, pendants, brooches etc.). As agreed earlier with the University of Warsaw, the fieldwork is run by the Project Team member Dr Bartłomiej Rogalski of the National Museum in Szczecin who is in charge of a group of 15 students from the Institute of Archaeology University of Warsaw, with Professor Aleksander Bursche as consultant. This year’s fieldwork is carried out on the property of the municipality of Suchań, on the edge of an upland, close to the ice-marginal valley of the Reczyca, not far from a spring which feeds that river. So far we have identified some prehistoric features associated with the Lusatian Culture. Also involved in this year’s fieldwork is a team of paleobotanists from the University of Gdańsk led by Professor Małgorzata Latałowa. Their task is to identify the best site to drill for the pollen profiles. The finds from Suchań will be presented in 2014 at an exhibition in the National Museum in Szczecin.
