The Hanging Cave - winter report

2013.02.11 -

Despite the wintry weather work is already under way to make ready for the approaching archaeological investigation of the cave at Jastrzębnik ("Hanging Cave"). On Monday, 27 January, the specialist team had a meeting with the Project Leader, Professor Aleksander Bursche – first, in Cracow, next, in the cave itself. Present at the two meetings were Andrzej Ciszewski, Director and Owner of AMC mining and heights works, Janusz Mosur, site manager, Maciej Sobczyk of the University of Warsaw Centre of Pre-Columbian Studies, expert in cave archaeology, who recently joined the Project Team, and Marcin Rudnicki from the University of Warsaw Institute of Archaeology, archaeological fieldwork supervisor. The aim of the meeting was to assess the scope of works needed to secure the site of the investigation and their cost, and to identify the technical and equipment requirements. The roof of the cave was found to be sufficiently stable, with no need to install vertical supports, at least, not during the first stage of exploration. Despite this the technical costs of the investigation will be significant and may make it necessary to seek additional sources of funding – other than the resources provided for in the Project cost estimate. During the meeting of the Project managers it was decided to hold the archaeological excavation of the cave at Jastrzębnik in July 2013. This is to be preceded by preliminary recording work, complete with scanning the main chamber of the cave in 3D.
