Results

The main result of our Project will be a synthetic and comprehensive perspective on changes in settlement, culture, ethnicity, demography and social order observed on the Odra and the Vistula basin during the Migration Period. This will be a valuable contribution, expected by western European researchers, as the processes taking place in Central Europe during the Migration Period had a highly significant impact on the processes underlying the formation of the first medieval polities in southern and western Europe.

Our Project is the first inquiry to be made in the region focused on the Migration Period, with contribution from a wide range of disciplines of history, palaeodemography and palaeobotany, as well as archaeology. The Migration Period gained full recognition only two decades ago when the researcher community largely broke away from the state-imposed doctrine on Slav settlement continuity in Central Europe.
