Old and new finds from the Migration Period

There is a need to re-investigate with the help of more advanced scientific apparatus also the Migration Period assemblages and single finds known from past research and – especially – those discovered recently. These include a long series of buckles (e.g. from settlement sites at Dobrzyń, distr. Inowrocław and Międzybórz, distr. Oleśnica), the complete sword recovered at Juszkowo, distr. Gdańsk. Our Team will also has to address discoveries like the cemetery at Ulów, distr. Tomaszów Lubelski, or the sacrificial site on Lake Nidajno, at Czaszkowo in distr. Mrągowo, identified in 2010. Closer analysis of these assemblages and single finds, the study of their analogies, dating, relating them to the results of palaeobotanical studies, is expected to furnish an entirely new insight on settlement, culture and social change during the Migration Period, including in particular the rise of the elite class. Some of these assemblages were analysed exhaustively, as e.g., the deposits from Wapno, Zagórzyn and Karlino, furnishing far-reaching conclusions in this regard. They confirm at the same time that it is valid to continue this line of research. A series of Migration Period finds from Poland is to be analysed and published as part of our Project.
