Lubieszewo
Lubieszewo, Gryfice commune, West Pomeranian Voivodeship, a →Migration Period settlement on a sandy elevation, site of discovery in early 20th century of three graves, “type Lubieszewo”, dated to the early →Migration Period . Archaeological excavation run during the second half of the 1960s by R. Wołągiewicz (Szczecin) exposed an area of 1 ha with several concentrations of postholes, one of them interpreted as the remains of a long house, of which only a half was uncovered. The other concentrations were interpreted as granaries in post-in-ground construction and, possibly, small agricultural buildings. In the neighbourhood of the long house a pit hut was discovered. There were also several cobbled areas of obscure function. The spatial layout of the settlement is hard to reconstruct but in its form and character it did not differ from settlements of Late Antiquity and was continuation of →Migration Period occupation. This is documented by small finds recovered from the site and its immediate surroundings during the archaeological excavation and non-destructive fieldwork carried out in 2011–2012 by a team from the Archaeological Institute from Łódź in cooperation with Zentrum für Baltische und Skandinavische Archäologie in Schleswig (R. Blankenfeldt): From 1960s fieldwork comes a fragment of a glass beaker decorated with threading discovered in a mid-5th century context, an iron spur and a Late Migration Period brooch (Fig. 1). From the non-destructive studies comes e.g., a casting mould for a boat-shaped sword pommel overlay. Finds of swords with this form of pommel are recorded only in Scandinavia and are dated to phases C3-D1. The latest find from L. is a fragment of a brooch – type Mecklenburgische Dreiknopffibel - dated to the latter half of the 5th century and classified to the earliest horizon of the Merovingian period.
